RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
